4 steps to achieving your New Year’s resolutions every year

People often make lofty New Year’s resolutions at the beginning of the year but struggle to keep up with them after just a few months. For most of us, these can be goals related to family, work, fitness, finances, education, etc. If you’re ready to get serious about your resolutions this year, you’ve come to the right place for some techniques that will help you become an achiever.

  1. Don’t overdo it.

Don’t set too many goals. It’s a good idea to pick ONE very important goal that you want to achieve no matter the circumstances that are thrown your way. Once you decide on this main goal, it’s okay to set a few other goals that you’d like to achieve. Make sure this list doesn’t get too lengthy or you may get lost and lose confidence in yourself. If you keep this list to two to three goals, you will be able to focus on what’s most important to you. Once you cross a few goals off your list (by achieving them of course), it’ll be time to add a few new goals and start working towards achieving those.

  1. Write them down.

Make yourself accountable. If the resolutions are just thoughts in your head, they can easily be forgotten. A great way to turn these thoughts into action is to write them down and post them somewhere you frequent every day. This may be on your fridge, your desk at work, the inside of your pantry (for when you go to grab that late night snack), or even on your Facebook page. Don’t forget to write these down!

  1. Make or break a habit.

Once you’ve made your goals, it’s time to plan out tasks that you can do to work towards completing your goal every single day. Making a plan that you can put into action will be very effective. If you’re trying to lose weight, make sure you are active every day, which will quickly become a habit. The experts say it takes about 28 days to make or break a habit. If you stick to it, soon enough, you won’t find yourself dreading to make it to the gym after work and it’ll feel much more natural.

  1. Make specific goals.

Don’t make goals that are too vague. If you have a specific goal, it’s a lot easier to break it down and make it more manageable. If your goal is to “lose weight” this year, try to make it more specific like “visit the gym 5 days a week” or “reduce drinking alcohol to once every two weeks”. These smaller goals will help you hold yourself accountable and help you lose weight.
